<p>Mount Makiling (also rarely known as Mount Maquiling) is a mountain located in the province of Laguna on the island of Luzon, Philippines. It is an inactive volcano, which rises to 1,090 m above sea level.</p>
<p>According to popular folklore, the mountain is the domain of legendary figure Maria Makiling, who protects its forests and wildlife. The mountain is also said to be shaped like a woman&#8217;s profile.</p>
<p>The University of the Philippines, Los Baños is designated as the official caretaker of the mountain.</p>

Once a haven of New People&#8217;s Army insurgents, it is now a popular hiking destination, offering a view of Laguna Lake, Talim Island, and the Tagalog provinces of Rizal and Laguna.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">It is located along the boundaries of Jalajala, Rizal, Pililla, Rizal and Pakil, Laguna, although the most common starting point for the climb up is from Barangay, Malaya, Pililla, Rizal.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">It is known in legend for the miraculous discovery of the icon of Our Lady of Maulawin, whose shrine can be found on the Jalajala side.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">One famous feature is the view of the &#8220;Bundok ng Susong Dalaga&#8221; (Maiden&#8217;s breast mountains) &#8211; two huge mounds of conical hills resembling the female breast, which are the highest peaks on neighboring Talim Island. These two hills are among the more famous of several hills in the Tagalog regions who share the same name, because local folks of old often named identical conical hills as such. This feature is best observed from Mt. Sembrano.</div>

<p>As part of our advocacy to promote responsible mountaineering, Action &amp; Fitness contributing writer Elmer Cabotage will conduct a lecture entitled Travel and Backpacking in the Philippines : An Introduction to the Basic Mountaineering Course on December 14, 2009 at the ROX-Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education. The talk includes practical tips on planning and organizing adventure travel, equipment selection, cultural sensitivity and a brief presentation on Leave No Trace Ethics. The lecture is presented in cooperation with the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. Education Committee, Recreational Outdoor eXchange – CORE, Habagat, Action and Fitness magazine and supported by Columbia, Sea to Summit, Eagle Creek, Nalgene, and Nissan Navarra.</p>
